First Impression: Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari has a long history of making high performing, luxurious grand tourers. From 2004 to 2011, Ferrari produced the 612 Scaglietti, a front-engine, rear-wheel drive grand tourer that has seating for four adults. It is a large two-door fastback coupe.

I recently saw the 612 at the 2011 Ferrari Festival in Houston. It is one of the biggest Ferraris I have seen. Compared to the other Ferraris at the event, this car did not stand out. It is big and not as sporty as other Ferraris. It is very stylish and has sleek lines, but rarely does Pininfarina make an ugly car.

The 612 is powered by a 5.7L V12 engine, paired with either a six-speed manual or six-speed semi-automatic transmission, that 532 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 196 mph. Prices for the 612 start at $320,038. That is expensive for what it is. There faster, more stylish Ferraris out there.

Top Gear featured the 612 during Series 5, Episode 8, where Jeremy raced against Richard and James from England to a lodge in Switzerland and won. The 612 has also been featured in Clarkson: Heaven and Hell, Redline, Supercars Exposed, Auto Esporte, Mischief Assault, Motorweek, 3000 Miles, and Fifth Gear. The 612 is playable in Test Drive Unlimited, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Project Gotham Racing 2, Project Gotham Racing 3, Ferrari Virtual Race, Forza Motorsport, Forza Motorsport 2, Forza Motorsport 3, Forza Motorsport 4, C.O.P.: The Recruit, Ray City, and Ferrari Challenge.

Final Thoughts: The 612 is big for a Ferrari. It is fast, but there are faster grand tourers wearing the Ferrari badge. There are also more stylish Ferraris out there. It is also expensive costing over $320,000. If you want a Ferrari with a lot of room, then this is the car for you. A great alternative to the 612 is the Aston-Martin DBS, which costs under $275,000. Ferrari has replaced the 612 Scaglietti with the Ferrari FF.
