First Impression: Ferrari LaFerrari

In the 2010s, we have seen the rise of hybrid supercars. Porsche came out with the 918 and McLaren came out with the P1. Ferrari debuted a hybrid version of the 599, called the Ferrari 599 HY-KERS at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari revealed a hybrid supercar based on test results of the Ferrari FXX, calling it the LaFerrari. From 2013 to 2015, a total of 499 LaFerraris were produced.

I first saw the LaFerrari at the 2015 Houston Ferrari Festival. There were two at the event and both roped off. Ferrari did not use legendary automotive design company Pininfarina, using its own design team instead. The LaFerrari is designed using F1 inspired aerodynamics. It is not the best looking Ferrari, but it still looks amazing. Ferrari designed the LaFerrari to be functional and show what you can do with a hybrid, especially with a drag coefficient of 0.3. Afterall, the LaFerrari is the first hybrid from Ferrari.

The LaFerrari uses a HY-KERS system that combines a 6.3L V12 engine rated at 800 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque and two electric motors give the LaFerrari a combined output of 963 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque. It uses a  dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual transmission. It has a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. It has a starting price of $1,416,000. That is a steep price, but you will get a lot of performance from a hybrid.

The LaFerrari has been featured on Motorweek and Top Gear. The LaFerrari is playable in Racing Race, CSR 2, Project IGNITION, Dr. Driving, Extreem Car Driving Simulator, Adrenaline Racing: Hypercars, Madallin Stunt, CSR Racing, The Crew, Forza Motorsport 5, Car Town, Forza Horizon 2, Forza Motorsport 6, Real Racing 3, Asphalt: Nitro, Driveclub, Grand Theft Auto V, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Assetto Corza, Need For Speed: No Limites, and Top Speed.

Final Thoughts: The LaFerrari is an incerdible vehicle. Along with the Porsche 918 and the McLaren P1, the LaFerrari pushes not only the limits of what a hybrid can do, but what a supercar can do. The LaFerrari has a steep price tag and is very rare. While it is quicker than its predecessor the Ferrari Enzo, it has the same top speed as the Enzo. Overall, it is a great car, but it is hurt by the name. It should have been called the F70.
